If you’ve spent more than five minutes on social media, you’ve probably seen:

“Raw feeding is dangerous”

“Kibble is causing your dog's health problems.”

“Your veterinarian is only recommending food they sell.”

The list goes on and on…

Somewhere along the way, pet care stopped being about education and started becoming a competition of clickbait to go viral.

And honestly? It’s NOT helping dogs.

The more shocking a post is, the more comments it gets. The more outrage it creates, the more people share it. Before long, an opinion becomes “fact” simply because everyone has seen it repeated enough times.

I’ve watched pet parents become completely overwhelmed even from my own lifestyle posts! They’re terrified they are failing their dog because they “can’t afford” the same care but they want to do what’s right.

Whether it’s multi-level marketing companies promising “the miracle supplement every dog needs,” influencers earning commissions and creators selling their own content… it can start to feel like every post is leading to a checkout page.

Now, I'm not against people making a living. As a small business owner myself, I understand the value of earning an income from the work you love. But somewhere along the way, pet care online has started feeling less like education and more like a constant stream of opinions telling us we are right or wrong.

There Is No Perfect Pet Parent

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned over the years is that dogs are individuals. What works beautifully for one dog may not work for another. My dogs thrive on fresh food and your dog may do incredibly well on kibble. But no one deserves shame for living their life the way they want.

When I first entered the pet industry, I wanted to learn everything! I listened to every expert. I followed every trend. I wanted to feed the “perfect diet” and be the best parent ever for The Pugstables. But over time as my own dogs continued to experience health challenges no matter how well I cared for them, I reflected on some of the decisions I made before and decided…

When we know better, we do better and that’s all we can do!

We can’t go back and change what we didn’t know at the time. But we can choose to stay curious and make informed decisions moving forward. The goal isn’t to chase every opinion that appears on our phones—it’s to listen and make thoughtful choices for the dog standing right in front of us.

The more dogs I care for, the more I see that health isn’t built from one single decision. A dog’s overall quality of life is much bigger than what side of medicine you agree with. Stop cringing and just live life!

I’m Switzerland Baby!

We need to improve a dog’s life without making the owner feel guilty.

Can we add fresh food to kibble instead of insisting not to feed it?

Can we move away from the idea that titer testing means anti-vaccine?

Can we acknowledge that both approaches have valuable roles to play?

I would much rather leave a conversation feeling informed, than frightened.

Maybe it is just me, but when an online veterinarian shares information, I want to understand the why behind the recommendation—not feel like I’m being pressured into believing their opinion is the only acceptable choice.

For example, I appreciate when a veterinarian shares information that encourages pet parents to look deeper, ask questions, and be active participants in their pet’s care. But I’ve also seen veterinarians caution about the importance of evidence-based care. Those conversations matter, because protecting pets from unsafe practices should always be the priority.

Where I struggle is when the delivery becomes dismissive.

I think we have to recognize how much social media influences these conversations. Most recently, we have all watched a pet creator build their platform around one feeding philosophy, only to later share that they no longer follow that approach and have moved toward something different.

And changing their mind wasn’t the problem. We should want people to learn, grow, and adjust when they gain new information. The concern is that they claim they were “wrong” and admitted they only did it to go viral.

When the message becomes, “anyone who questions conventional recommendations is being misled,” or when another professional is dismissed as “fearful” simply for approaching care differently, I think we lose an opportunity for a more productive conversation.

Because fear exists on both sides.

What I value most is someone willing to look at the whole picture, consider the individual animal, and have honest conversations about what may or may not be beneficial for them.

Because good care isn’t about choosing a side. It’s about being willing to evaluate new information and make decisions based on the needs of the animal in front of us.

Both conversations can have value. But the difference is whether the conversation creates curiosity or fear.

I don’t need every professional to agree with each other. But I hope we can move toward a place where we can have respectful conversations without making people feel guilty for making the best decision they can with the information they have.

Because at the end of the day, most of us are here for the same reason: we love our animals and want to help them live healthier, happier lives.

Just Be, Mindful.

Imagine how much more we could learn if we spent less time trying to “win” debates and more time listening to one another.

Fear may get clicks. But compassion builds community.

And if there’s one thing I’ve learned after all these years in pet care, it’s this:

The best decisions are made from a willingness to meet in the middle.

Back when I first switched to feeding fresh food, I quickly realized that if I didn’t stay organized, my ADHD was all over the place.

So I bought multiple sets of Pyrex containers of all different sizes.

At the time, it felt almost silly how much structure I was building around something as simple as feeding dogs. But those little containers became the foundation of what I still do today—not just as a pet parent, but now as a pet sitter managing multiple dogs, diets, and routines under one roof.

Over time, I built a full system that lets me confidently feed fresh meals three times a day, manage supplements, rotate diets, and keep everything clear even when I have multiple dogs in the house.

The Middle Drawer: For Today & Tomorrow

If you open the middle drawer of my fridge, you’ll find my whole feeding system in motion…

On the left side are 3-cup containers prepped with the next day’s meals, usually thawing or ready to go. Each meal is portioned ahead of time so I’m never standing there trying to figure out who gets what in the moment.

On the right side, you’ll find three 1-cup containers that I prep the night before for up to three daily servings — AM, AFT, and PM. Some dogs do better with more than just breakfast and dinner, so that middle afternoon slot helps cover lunch or a much needed snack, keeping energy levels steady and routines consistent for dogs who need that extra support throughout the day.

And on the far right, there is a fourth container I keep for anything extra like refrigerated treats, toppers, or supplements that don’t fit into the main meal prep flow but still need to stay accessible and ready to grab as needed.

When you’re feeding multiple dogs with different needs and schedules, simplicity isn’t just helpful—it’s what keeps everything running smoothly.

Color Coding: My Extremely Effective System

As you look at each container, you’ll notice five different colors. Each one tells me exactly who the food belongs to.

Originally, I used light blue for Darla and dark blue (IYKYK) for Lily. That system worked beautifully—until it didn’t.

Losing Lily changed everything more than when I lost Dixon. I’ll be honest, I struggled to even look at that color the first week, but eventually I adjusted.

Darla Pugstable now has her own dedicated color: white while both Dark and light blue have evolved into a shared system for dogs who either belong to the same family or are just closely matched in routine.

Then there’s pink and teal, which have always been my “guest” colors—flexible, temporary, but still structured enough that no one gets missed.

And underneath all the containers, I use red lids as my visual reminder system. If a container is sitting on a red lid, it signals that it’s in active rotation. If a red lid is empty, that’s my cue to refill or I don’t currently have that “slot” filled for a guest stay. It keeps me from having to think too hard in the middle of a busy day.

The Freezer: Where Meal Prep Really Lives

My dog freezer is the backbone of everything else. I keep it fully sectioned, and each dog has a designated space for their food.

It originally started with Dixon’s food at the top, Lily in the middle, and special guests plus enrichment at the bottom. Now that both have passed, Darla has moved up to the top, and my fosters took over the middle space.

Each section matters as they tell a story of who’s currently here being cared for — even if they’re only staying temporarily.

It’s not just storage—it’s structure for stability!

Supplements, Treats, and Emergency Prep

Beyond the fridge and freezer, I also maintain a dedicated area in our kitchen for meal prep that keeps everything organized by function:

• A slightly elevated shelf for Darla’s supplements

• A container for freeze-dried and kibble options

• A separate bin for guest medications and treats

• A drying mat for all of my freshly washed tools

• A serving tray to help me carry all the bowls at once

I also keep Dr. Harvey’s on hand — both the base mix and a topper — as my “emergency system” for picky eaters, running out of food, or those moments when I somehow forget to thaw food in time.

It’s one of those things you don’t think you need… until you really, really do.

Why All of This Matters

At first glance, this might look like over-organization—because it is a lot.

But in reality, it’s about reducing stress for both me and the dogs by taking the guesswork out of my day.

When food is consistent, clearly labeled, and easy to access, I can focus on what actually matters: behavior, comfort and enrichment.

Dogs pick up on chaos—and on calm. I’ve learned that the more organized my kitchen is, the more grounded the entire house feels.

It started with three little pugs and a desire to do things right, and somehow, became one of the quiet foundations of how I care for every dog that comes through my door.

P.S. Systems aren’t about control—they’re about creating space for better care.

It was brand new to the market at that time and I’m not going to lie, it worked.

His itching improved, his skin looked better, and for about a year he took it every single day. At the time, I didn’t question it. I trusted the professionals around me, and I was grateful to see him feeling more comfortable.

Before I left the veterinary practice, I had stocked up on his medication so I wouldn’t run out right away. But around that same time, something else was happening…

I discovered the work of Rodney Habib who had been collaborating with Dr. Karen Becker and I began reading about nutrition, inflammation, the microbiome - etc holistic care, and for the first time I started asking why Dixon’s body was reacting instead of only asking how to stop the itching.

So I made the decision to wean him off Apoquel but I wasn’t prepared for what happened next as within weeks, Dixon’s body exploded with inflammation. His face, paws, and skin became so swollen that he looked like a mini elephant. Watching him suffer was heartbreaking!

Looking back now, I realize I was trying everything — but I still hadn’t found what his body truly needed. A local canine nutritionist had recommended a supplement containing numerous herbs and while his intentions were good, in hindsight it simply wasn’t the right fit for Dixon.

I then explored ozone therapy prescribed by a local vet, both internally and topically. We worked on healing his gut while I asked endless questions and kept searching for answers. Then something unexpected happened.

A friend of a friend referred me to an animal communicator. Whether or not animal communication resonates with you, I can only tell you what happened in our journey.

She said, “He keeps saying, ‘Mom, remember that base mix you had me try with rabbit? I know it’s expensive for your budget, but I really liked that. Can we try it again?’”

Immediately I knew exactly what she was talking about.

Months earlier, I had briefly fed him a sample of Dr Harvey’s Paradigm base mix with some raw rabbit but never moved forward with it because of the cost.

So I listened, I put him back on rabbit and within days, I had my dog back!

His energy returned. His skin settled. His eyes were bright again.

It wasn’t magic… it was the beginning of understanding what his body had been trying to communicate with me all along.

Why I Chose a Different Path

My story isn’t meant to shame anyone whose dog takes a prescription or a vet who prescribes it. For many dogs, they do provide meaningful relief from relentless itching and improve quality of life but for me, after everything Dixon and I experienced, they DO NOT align with how I approach chronic disease.

Prescription medications like Apoquel and Cytopoint are designed to interrupt the itch pathway. They help manage symptoms, but they don’t necessarily identify why a dog is experiencing chronic inflammation in the first place.

For me, that “why” became far more important than simply stopping the scratching. I wanted to know:

• What was driving his immune system?

• Was his gut healthy?

• Was food contributing?

• Were environmental factors involved?

• Could Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine (TCVM) offer perspective?

Rabbit Changed More Than His Diet

That curiosity changed everything for us. One of the first things I learned through TCVM was that rabbit is considered a cooling protein. For Dixon, it appeared to be exactly what his inflamed body needed. Eventually though, I learned another valuable lesson…

There is no perfect protein forever!

I kept him on rabbit longer than he probably needed because I was afraid to change what was working. Ironically, that taught me that healing isn’t about finding one miracle food for life. It’s about paying attention!

Listening, adjusting and rotating proteins appropriately.

Supporting the body instead of assuming yesterday’s solution will always be today’s solution. Our dogs change and so do their nutritional needs.

Dixon Was My Greatest Teacher

He lived to be 18 years old and during his lifetime he overcame far more than allergies. He lived through vestibular disease. He battled dental disease. He faced countless health challenges including Dementia at the end that many people would have assumed I kept him alive too long. Yet he continued to walk, eat, and live his life.

Every single challenge pushed me to learn more, question more, and become a better advocate—not just for him, but for every dog I’ve cared for since.

I don’t believe there is one protocol that fits every dog or that there’s one perfect food. What I do believe is that our dogs deserve to find the root cause, not a band aid.

Because sometimes healing doesn’t begin with another prescription.

Sometimes it begins with listening!

When people hear that I’m a pet sitter, they usually imagine someone who stops by to fill a food bowl, let the dog outside, and make sure everyone’s still alive until their family gets home. The truth? Professional pet care is so much more than that.

When someone trusts me with their dog, they’re asking me to become ‘them’ for a little while. That’s a responsibility I don’t take lightly. It’s never been about collecting a paycheck. It’s always been about the animals.

Why Pet Sitting?

I officially started in 2014, but my journey really began because of one little pug named Lily. “The Pug Mom” wasn’t a carefully crafted brand. It was simply a nickname people started calling me after I adopted her. I was constantly saying, “This is my kid—I just didn’t give birth to her.”

As a millennial with no plans for humans, she truly was my mini-me. Then, almost a year later, Luna wandered into my life. Suddenly I had a yin and a yang! About six months after that, I agreed to foster an older puggle named Dixon. The plan was never to adopt him, but sometimes dogs have other plans!

In my 20’s, I somehow found myself with three dogs... and honestly? It just felt right. That little grumble changed the direction of my life forever.

Falling Down the Pet Wellness Rabbit Hole

Around 2016, I became completely fascinated with a holistic lifestyle. The more I learned, the more I realized there was so much more to caring for dogs than food, walks, and cuddles.

I immersed myself in earning multiple certifications through Dogs Naturally Magazine and also completed Dr. Barbara Royal’s Integrative Animal Caregiver program before it was retired. When that certification ended, I continued my education through College of Integrative Veterinary Therapies, along with Fear Free, FetchFind, and coursework through Dr. Judy Morgan’s Naturally Healthy Pets.

Learning has never really stopped. Because if there’s something new that can help animals live happier & healthier lives, I want to know about it.

Today, I’m working toward my Animal Communication certification through Dr. Angelique Barbara and already have a few more courses on my wish list.

If there’s one thing you’ll learn about me, it’s that I don’t pick sides in the holistic versus conventional debate - I’m ‘Switzerland’! 😄

I believe modern veterinary medicine saves lives, and I’ll always use it when it’s needed. But I’m also not going to stop feeding fresh food or using holistic remedies that have helped my own dogs thrive.

To me, pet wellness is about finding the right balance for each individual dog— not following one philosophy at all costs.

I don’t personally feed kibble, but I don’t see it as ‘poison.’ It’s simply not the approach I choose when caring for my own dogs as I always aim to make fresh food work for them.

How I Became the ‘Mindful Dog Mom’

In 2020, during the pandemic, something unexpected happened. People kept calling me thinking I bred pugs. Apparently puppy fever was real.

While I loved being The Pug Mom, I realized it no longer reflected where my heart—or my business—was headed. I wasn’t trying to build a brand around one breed. I wanted to build a movement around helping people make thoughtful, informed decisions for their dogs. That’s when Mindful Dog Mom was born.

Over the next few years, I shifted away from drop-in visits and focused exclusively on private home boarding and becoming what I now call a ‘Canine Concierge’.

Your Canine Concierge

People hear the word and think of a hotel front desk you can go to for information. For me, it’s about connection, not transactions.

I help families navigate the overwhelming world of pet care by connecting them with trusted veterinarians, trainers, groomers, nutrition resources, local businesses, and products that align with their goals.

It can mean answering questions about pet care, or sometimes it simply means pointing someone in the right direction.

If I don’t know the answer, I’ll do everything I can to help you find someone who does because no pet parent should have to figure it all out alone.

What’s Next?

Now, in 2026, another exciting chapter is beginning! I’m in the process of opening my own storefront — a space built around education, trusted products, and community. I can’t wait to share more with you this summer!

Looking back, I smile when people still call me “The Pug Mom.” That nickname started because of one little dog who changed my life.

I used to feed mushrooms to Dixon fresh from the farmers market.

At first, I tried tinctures, powders, and different blends for his allergies, and dementia — hoping something in the supplement world would make a noticeable difference. But over time, I kept coming back to the same truth: the thing that actually supported him the most was whole, fresh food.

I’d bring them home and gently prepare them for him, not thinking in terms of dosing or protocols, but in terms of real food and nourishment. It felt simple in a way nothing in the supplement aisle ever really did.

There was no label to decode. No regimen to follow. No pressure to “get it right.” Just food in a bowl and a dog I loved.

After my last post about how overwhelming the pet supplement world can feel, so many of you messaged me saying the same thing:

“How do I know what’s actually good? What if I don’t want to cook myself?”

And honestly? That’s the hard part! Every brand claims to be the best. Every ad promises miracles. Every rabbit hole somehow leads to another supplement your dog “needs.”

It can make even the most intentional dog parent feel frozen.

That’s why I’ve been trying to approach supplements differently — less from a place of panic and more from a place of curiosity, observation, and long-term wellness support.

One category I’ve always been interested in, is medicinal mushrooms for dogs.

Not because I think they’re magic. Not because I think every dog suddenly needs an eight mushroom blend. But because there’s growing interest around how certain mushrooms may support immune health, vitality, cognitive function, and overall aging support for only for humans, but for our pets!

And when you have senior dogs like me or dogs dealing with lumps & bumps, inflammation, lower energy, or chronic wellness issues… those conversations become really interesting.

The Truth: There Is No “Perfect” Supplement

This is probably the biggest thing I want dog parents to hear: You do not have to use only one brand.

Some dogs thrive on one formula and not another.
Some dogs do better rotating products.
Some dogs need less.
Some dogs need more support during certain seasons of life.

A huge part of holistic wellness is learning to listen to your dog’s body — while also staying open to conventional veterinary support when needed.

That’s also why I don’t think supplements should become another source of fear or guilt.

The goal is NOT perfection.
The goal IS support.

Mushroom Brands I’ve Personally Used

This product caught my attention because it’s specifically designed for aging dogs with lumps/bumps and uses a blend of organic fruiting bodies only.

One of the biggest things they emphasize is high beta-glucan content, which matters because beta-glucans are considered one of the most beneficial compounds naturally found in medicinal mushrooms.

Buddy Guard is also a NASC (National Animal Supplement Council) member product, and the company states that every batch is third-party tested for quality, purity, and safety.

However, they’ve shared that they do not currently have a COA (Certificate of Analysis) available publicly yet because they’re still building out that process.

They’ve also shared that a pilot study has been underway for nearly two years involving two Harvard Medical School researchers alongside a veterinarian leading the study, with anticipated publication around the end of next year.

I personally appreciate transparency like that — especially in an industry where vague marketing is everywhere.

Real Mushrooms

They are probably one of the better-known companies in the wellness space overall. A lot of people like them because they focus heavily on fruiting bodies instead of grain-heavy mycelium products, and they publicly discuss beta-glucan testing and extraction methods.

They also offer single mushroom options, which can be helpful for dogs who may benefit from targeted support instead of large blends.

For example:

• Lion’s Mane for cognitive support

• Turkey Tail for immune support

• Reishi for calming and immune balance

Some dog parents appreciate the flexibility of using individual mushroom ingredients instead of an all-in-one blend, and these products are also commonly vet recommended, including by Dr. Judy Morgan.

That said, some have raised questions about the inclusion of inactive ingredients such as silicon dioxide in certain formulations, even though they were developed under the guidance of Dr. Rob Silver.

MycoDog

They tend to appeal more to pet parents who are specifically looking for medicinal mushroom formulations designed for both dogs and cats.

One thing I consistently notice — and really appreciate — is their strong focus on education around functional mushrooms and overall canine wellness, rather than relying purely on modern marketing hype. They’ve also conducted a senior dog study, which adds to the conversation around their use in long-term wellness support.

Their Clarity Blend is my personal favorite. It didn’t seem to make a noticeable difference for Dixon toward the end of his life, but most recently with Darla, I’ve been really happy with the results—especially in how she’s become more confident navigating her fear of heights and is now comfortably using her pet stairs. Plus it passed her Chiropractor’s Kineslogy Muscle test!

Animal Essentials

They’re known more broadly for herbal tincture-based support.

Some dogs do really well with liquid herbal formulas versus powders or capsules — especially picky eaters or those with digestive sensitivities.

I did have Dixon on their Brain Awake tincture whenever I was in a pinch and couldn’t make it to the farmer’s market, but honestly I think it was more the herbs in the formula that helped soothe him than the added Lion’s Mane.

That said, their standard mushroom products are popular because they’re designed to be simple, accessible, and easy to incorporate into a daily routine— especially for pet parents who want a straightforward way to add functional support without overcomplicating things.

Brands Overall

Adored Beast Apothecary, Canine Matrix, and Green Juju have all been part of my integrative journey at different points. When I first started leaning into a more holistic lifestyle, Canine Matrix was actually one of the first supplements I used with The Pugstables after seeing it featured in Dogs Naturally Magazine. Over time, I transitioned into Adored Beast Apothecary and incorporated Green Juju’s mushroom probiotic into my rotation-based approach, but more recently I’ve shifted to their newer fermented probiotics, which I like pairing alongside MycoDog depending on what each dog needs at the time. And for my fosters, I’ve stuck with Buddy Guard as a consistent and affordable go-to, especially when I’m thinking about setting them up for their future owners with something simple, reliable, and easy to continue once they transition into their new homes.

Why Rotation Can Matter

One thing I’ve learned over time is that wellness doesn’t always have to look rigid. Sometimes rotating supplements seasonally or based on your dog’s needs make sense.

Maybe your dog does well on one mushroom blend for a few months, then benefits from switching to another formula. Maybe you use more immune support during stressful seasons. Maybe your dog’s body simply responds better to one company’s sourcing or extraction style.

There isn’t always one universal answer.

Over the past decade, the pet industry has exploded with wellness products. More parents than ever are thinking about gut health, immune support, and longevity. Companies know we want the best for our dogs. But labels don’t always tell you how effective or high-quality the product actually is.

More Supplements ≠ Better Health

It’s tempting to think: the more supplements, the better —especially if you have multiple dogs with different needs. Lily’s CKD means I have to be very selective with what I give her, and as Darla is a new pup (to me), I’m still learning how to help her without overwhelming her system.

I remember noticing first she needed help standing to eat. Then I remember adjusting bowls, supporting her body, and telling myself we’d “take it day by day.” But by the Summer, Lily was officially paralyzed and there was no going back. You don’t get the luxury of sitting in fear for very long — your dog still needs you. So… we adapted

Lily can still express her bladder on her own, but I help her every few hours to make sure she’s fully emptying. I’ve learned her cues — she’ll huff and puff at me until I pay attention, and sure enough, once I check… bam! it all comes out. That consistency has made a noticeable difference in her comfort. Along with daily hygiene that is non-negotiable. We use manuka honey wipes followed by a topical antibacterial spray to help reduce bacteria. It’s not glamorous work, but these small routines play a huge role in preventing infections — especially for paralyzed dogs, who are more prone to moisture build-up.

We rotate acupuncture and chiropractic therapy monthly, alternating every 2 weeks. It’s become part of our rhythm — not something we “try when things get bad,” but something we use proactively to keep her body supported.

She also gets CBD & Mushrooms daily including an anti-inflammatory blend in the morning, seizure-support at night, and a calming blend as needed if she’s anxious or stressed. On top of that, Lily receives milk thistle, bladder, and kidney support — all chosen intentionally and adjusted as her needs change. Over the last two years, I have noticed a frustrating pattern that Lily would always get UTIs in May and again in the Fall from September–November. So this Winter, I made two big changes!

By following a protein rotation and implementing a TCVM Water based diet on weekends, I’ve seen noticeable improvements in her bloodwork. When I was feeding beef and turkey more regularly, her BUN levels were much more elevated while this current rotation has supported her kidneys far more effectively.

For fun, she also gets:

• Small Batch Pork treats with Chamomile which has recently become part of Lily’s routine because it supports more than just her mood! It truly helps soothe the nervous system, ease muscle tension, and digestion — all things that matter when a dog’s body is under constant stress from limited mobility.

• Heart & Kidney treats with Beef have been a part of Lily’s routine for awhile now as I follow a “like feeds like” approach! These organ meats help support the heart and kidneys — which is especially important since Lily has both a heart murmur and kidney disease. I rotate beef with pork that so she gets targeted support without overwhelming her system.

• Bone Broth has also become a regular part of Lily’s routine nourishing her body, supporting her joints, and providing gentle, easy-to-digest nutrients — all essential when managing chronic conditions and mobility challenges. Although, I’m still on the lookout for more pork and rabbit options to keep her rotation varied rather than popular Beef & Chicken.

Looking Back — and Looking Forward 🐾💗

When I first adopted Lily, she was actually diagnosed with Grade 2 Luxating Patella, NOT Pug Myelopathy. Thankfully, it never caused her much trouble — there were only a few times I had to gently adjust her joint back into place, and her vets never stressed surgery as necessary. These last 12 years with Lily have definitely taught me to be more observant, proactive, and far less dismissive of “minor” issues.

If there’s one supplement I wish I had introduced earlier for Lily, it’s Myos Green Lipped Mussel. I didn’t start using it until about 4 months AFTER her suspected IVDD diagnosis — and while it’s been supportive, I can’t help but think about how different things might have looked if I had implemented it proactively instead of reactively.

By sending samples directly to KSU, you can receive reliable results at a reasonable charge, typically just the cost of a blood draw, which can often be done alongside a wellness visit. Once completed, these results can serve as documentation of your pet’s immunity. There’s a saying I’ve always found fascinating: “Keep your friends close, and your enemies closer.”

For a long time, I wanted nothing to do with Rover. Like many pet care professionals, I was frustrated by how the platform undervalues the real trust, communication, and accountability that goes into caring for someone’s pets. I originally deleted my Rover profile back in 2015 because, at the time, I felt the platform’s priorities didn’t fully align with my own values around pet safety and individualized care. From my perspective, Rover seemed more focused on growth and convenience than on the deeper commitment to safety and trust that I believe every pet and owner deserves.

But nearly ten years later, I started to see things differently. I realized something important: the pet parents using Rover are not the enemy. They’re loving pet owners just trying to find someone they can trust. The real challenge isn’t the platform—it’s how people use it, and whether they know what to look for.

So instead of staying on the outside, I decided to meet the community where it already is. I am now accepting boarding requests on Rover’s platform—not because I need the exposure, but because I want to raise the standard from within the system.

Here are my top 3 tips to keep your pet happy:

1. Hydration is key 💧
   Always bring a collapsible bowl on early morning or late evening walks to keep your dog refreshed. Skip the ice cubes in their water though as studies show that sudden cold water can cause discomfort. Instead, offering room-temperature water frequently including a little water to their food is the safest way to keep them well-hydrated throughout the day. But don’t worry hydration doesn’t have to be boring — your pup can still beat the heat with supervised frozen enrichment treats! These keep your dog happily hydrated and mentally engaged without the shock of icy water.

2. Paw protection 🐾
   Walk your dog early in the morning or after sunset to avoid overheating and protect their paws from the scorching pavement. Asphalt can get dangerously hot in the summer and cause burns or blisters on tender paw pads. Whenever possible, stick to grassy areas and consider lightweight cooling booties for extra protection. After walks, check paws for any redness or irritation and soothe them with dog-safe balm. These simple steps keep your pup comfortable and safe during hot-weather strolls.

3. Cool zones ❄️
   To help your dog stay comfortable, consider investing in mats that absorb and dissipate your dog’s body heat, providing a cool surface to lie on without needing water or electricity. They’re perfect for use at home, in the car, or even outdoors during breaks. You can also try a simple, effective DIY: freeze a wet bandana or small towel and gently wrap it around your dog’s neck. Just soak the bandana, wring out excess water, freeze it for a couple of hours, and then use it to give your pup quick, refreshing relief from the heat. Both cooling mats and frozen bandanas offer easy, safe ways to keep your dog cool and comfortable during those hot Vegas days.

  Dogs pick up on our emotions so before you leave the house, take a moment to talk to them and offer a soothing gesture like a special treat, or give them their favorite toy. This helps signal that you’ll return soon and eases anxiety.

  Dogs thrive on predictability, so keeping feeding, walking, and playtimes on schedule helps ease their anxiety. If they’ll be alone for long stretches, consider hiring a trusted afternoon caregiver for bathroom breaks, exercise, and companionship to keep them happy and engaged.
  

• Practice short separations
  Start with quick “bye-byes” and build up to longer times alone.
  

• Create a comfy “safe spot”
  A cozy bed with favorite toys or a piece of your clothing can soothe separation stress.
  

• Enrichment toys
  Puzzle feeders and treat-dispensing toys keep minds busy and help reduce anxiety.
