I used to feed mushrooms to Dixon fresh from the farmers market.

At first, I tried tinctures, powders, and different blends for his allergies, and dementia — hoping something in the supplement world would make a noticeable difference. But over time, I kept coming back to the same truth: the thing that actually supported him the most was whole, fresh food.

I’d bring them home and gently prepare them for him, not thinking in terms of dosing or protocols, but in terms of real food and nourishment. It felt simple in a way nothing in the supplement aisle ever really did.

There was no label to decode. No regimen to follow. No pressure to “get it right.” Just food in a bowl and a dog I loved.

After my last post about how overwhelming the pet supplement world can feel, so many of you messaged me saying the same thing:

“How do I know what’s actually good? What if I don’t want to cook myself?”

And honestly? That’s the hard part! Every brand claims to be the best. Every ad promises miracles. Every rabbit hole somehow leads to another supplement your dog “needs.”

It can make even the most intentional dog parent feel frozen.

That’s why I’ve been trying to approach supplements differently — less from a place of panic and more from a place of curiosity, observation, and long-term wellness support.

One category I’ve always been interested in, is medicinal mushrooms for dogs.

Not because I think they’re magic. Not because I think every dog suddenly needs an eight mushroom blend. But because there’s growing interest around how certain mushrooms may support immune health, vitality, cognitive function, and overall aging support for only for humans, but for our pets!

And when you have senior dogs like me or dogs dealing with lumps & bumps, inflammation, lower energy, or chronic wellness issues… those conversations become really interesting.

The Truth: There Is No “Perfect” Supplement

This is probably the biggest thing I want dog parents to hear: You do not have to use only one brand.

Some dogs thrive on one formula and not another.
Some dogs do better rotating products.
Some dogs need less.
Some dogs need more support during certain seasons of life.

A huge part of holistic wellness is learning to listen to your dog’s body — while also staying open to conventional veterinary support when needed.

That’s also why I don’t think supplements should become another source of fear or guilt.

The goal is NOT perfection.
The goal IS support.

Mushroom Brands I’ve Personally Used

Transparency note: I may receive products and/or compensation from the brands I feature. However, I only share products I personally use and trust.

The brands that consistently come up in my world—and in conversations with other pet parents and professionals—include:

Each of these brands approaches mushrooms and functional wellness a little differently. And honestly, the space changes fast— new products launch, formulations shift, and some brands evolve or even disappear just like we saw with Noni Pup. So instead of trying to keep up with everything on the market, I want to focus on the ones I’ve actually used myself and can speak to from real experience.

Buddy Guard

This product caught my attention because it’s specifically designed for aging dogs with lumps/bumps and uses a blend of organic fruiting bodies only.

The formula contains:

• Organic Turkey Tail

• Organic Agaricus Blazei

• Organic Shiitake

• Organic Reishi

• Organic Chaga Sclerotium

• Organic Lion’s Mane

• Organic Maitake

• Organic Cordyceps

Inactive ingredients: none.

No fillers.
No synthetics.
No binders.
No capsules.
No silicon dioxide.
No microcrystalline cellulose.

Just active ingredients only.

One of the biggest things they emphasize is high beta-glucan content, which matters because beta-glucans are considered one of the most beneficial compounds naturally found in medicinal mushrooms.

Buddy Guard is also a NASC (National Animal Supplement Council) member product, and the company states that every batch is third-party tested for quality, purity, and safety.

However, they’ve shared that they do not currently have a COA (Certificate of Analysis) available publicly yet because they’re still building out that process.

They’ve also shared that a pilot study has been underway for nearly two years involving two Harvard Medical School researchers alongside a veterinarian leading the study, with anticipated publication around the end of next year.

I personally appreciate transparency like that — especially in an industry where vague marketing is everywhere.

Real Mushrooms

They are probably one of the better-known companies in the wellness space overall. A lot of people like them because they focus heavily on fruiting bodies instead of grain-heavy mycelium products, and they publicly discuss beta-glucan testing and extraction methods.

They also offer single mushroom options, which can be helpful for dogs who may benefit from targeted support instead of large blends.

For example:

• Lion’s Mane for cognitive support

• Turkey Tail for immune support

• Reishi for calming and immune balance

Some dog parents appreciate the flexibility of using individual mushroom ingredients instead of an all-in-one blend, and these products are also commonly vet recommended, including by Dr. Judy Morgan.

That said, some have raised questions about the inclusion of inactive ingredients such as silicon dioxide in certain formulations, even though they were developed under the guidance of Dr. Rob Silver.

MycoDog

They tend to appeal more to pet parents who are specifically looking for medicinal mushroom formulations designed for both dogs and cats.

One thing I consistently notice — and really appreciate — is their strong focus on education around functional mushrooms and overall canine wellness, rather than relying purely on modern marketing hype. They’ve also conducted a senior dog study, which adds to the conversation around their use in long-term wellness support.

Their Clarity Blend is my personal favorite. It didn’t seem to make a noticeable difference for Dixon toward the end of his life, but most recently with Darla, I’ve been really happy with the results—especially in how she’s become more confident navigating her fear of heights and is now comfortably using her pet stairs. Plus it passed her Chiropractor’s Kineslogy Muscle test!

Animal Essentials

They’re known more broadly for herbal tincture-based support.

Some dogs do really well with liquid herbal formulas versus powders or capsules — especially picky eaters or those with digestive sensitivities.

I did have Dixon on their Brain Awake tincture whenever I was in a pinch and couldn’t make it to the farmer’s market, but honestly I think it was more the herbs in the formula that helped soothe him than the added Lion’s Mane.

That said, their standard mushroom products are popular because they’re designed to be simple, accessible, and easy to incorporate into a daily routine— especially for pet parents who want a straightforward way to add functional support without overcomplicating things.

Brands Overall

Adored Beast Apothecary, Canine Matrix, and Green Juju have all been part of my integrative journey at different points. When I first started leaning into a more holistic lifestyle, Canine Matrix was actually one of the first supplements I used with The Pugstables after seeing it featured in Dogs Naturally Magazine. Over time, I transitioned into Adored Beast Apothecary and incorporated Green Juju’s mushroom probiotic into my rotation-based approach, but more recently I’ve shifted to their newer fermented probiotics, which I like pairing alongside MycoDog depending on what each dog needs at the time. And for my fosters, I’ve stuck with Buddy Guard as a consistent and affordable go-to, especially when I’m thinking about setting them up for their future owners with something simple, reliable, and easy to continue once they transition into their new homes.

Why Rotation Can Matter

One thing I’ve learned over time is that wellness doesn’t always have to look rigid. Sometimes rotating supplements seasonally or based on your dog’s needs make sense.

Maybe your dog does well on one mushroom blend for a few months, then benefits from switching to another formula. Maybe you use more immune support during stressful seasons. Maybe your dog’s body simply responds better to one company’s sourcing or extraction style.

There isn’t always one universal answer.

And I think that’s important to normalize because social media can make wellness feel weirdly black-and-white—especially with influencers on both sides of the spectrum.

How To Use Mushrooms

At this point in my journey as both a dog mom and pet professional, I care less about finding “miracle products” and more about:

• Ingredient quality

• Transparency

• Sourcing

• Functional support

• How the dog actually responds

I also think it’s okay to try things thoughtfully, observe, pivot, and adjust.

That’s not failure. That’s being an intentional caregiver.

Because at the end of the day, holistic wellness isn’t about chasing perfection.

It’s about building a toolbox that supports both you and your dog in a sustainable way!

If you’ve ever gone down the rabbit hole of pet supplements, you know exactly what I mean. You start with something simple like, “Maybe I should work on my dog’s joints.”

Next thing you know, you’re staring at different options!

• Joint chews

• Powders

• Green-lipped mussel

• Glucosamine

• Turmeric

• Mushrooms

• Probiotics

• Omega oils

• Senior Wellness

• Immune Defense

And every product claims to be the “best one” so suddenly you’re wondering…

• Does my dog actually need this?

• Is this brand safe?

• Why does this cost $60 for a tiny jar?

The Reality of Pet Wellness

Over the past decade, the pet industry has exploded with wellness products. More parents than ever are thinking about gut health, immune support, and longevity. Which is great, but it also means a lot of marketing noise. Terms like holistic, vet recommended, or natural are everywhere. For new pet parents it can feel impossible to know where to start and for dogs who have a chronic disease like my Lily, the stakes feel even higher.

Every new supplement I look at comes with questions:

• Will this support her kidneys safely?

• Could it interact with what she’s already taking?

• Is it really necessary, or just another trend?

Companies know we want the best for our dogs. But labels don’t always tell you how effective or high-quality the product actually is.

More Supplements ≠ Better Health

It’s tempting to think: the more supplements, the better —especially if you have multiple dogs with different needs. Lily’s CKD means I have to be very selective with what I give her, and as Darla is a new pup (to me), I’m still learning how to help her without overwhelming her system.

Supplements should support, not replace, the foundation of good care: balanced nutrition, regular exercise, and mental enrichment.

Suddenly as you may have seen on instagram, a dog’s bowl looks stacked:

• a probiotic

• a joint chew

• fish oil

• a multivitamin

• a mushroom blend

• a calming supplement

Yet the biggest drivers today of wellness are still a healthy weight and preventative care. Supplements should be intentional, not random.

Quality Matters

One thing that surprises many pet parents is that the supplement industry — for both humans and pets — isn’t regulated as tightly as people assume.

That means two products that look almost identical on the shelf may be completely different in terms of:

• potency

• sourcing

• testing

Some supplements contain far less of the active ingredient than the label suggests, while others use forms that aren’t very bioavailable.

This is why doing a little homework on brands can make a big difference.

How I Approach Supplements for Dogs

Over time, I’ve learned to simplify things instead of chasing every new product that pops up on the market.

Here are a few questions I always come back to.

1. What specific problem am I trying to support?

Is it mobility? Gut health? Skin issues? Kidney support? Anxiety?

The goal is to match a supplement to a clear purpose.

2. Is there evidence this ingredient helps?

Some ingredients have strong support behind them
— others are mostly marketing trends.

3. Is the brand transparent?

I look for brands that are open about:

• sourcing

• manufacturing standards

• third-party testing

Transparency builds trust.

4. Can food do this first?

Sometimes the most powerful “supplement” is actually food.

Things like:

• omega-rich fish

• bone broth

• medicinal mushrooms

can support many of the same systems people buy supplements for.

The End Goal

When you love your dog, it’s easy to feel like you should be doing all the things. But good care isn’t about throwing 10 supplements into the bowl.

It’s about understanding your dog’s individual needs and supporting them thoughtfully.

Sometimes that means adding something helpful.

Sometimes it means simplifying.

And sometimes, the best thing you can do is step away from the supplement aisle entirely and just go take your dog for a walk.

Because at the end of the day, that’s the part they care about most.

If you’ve followed my pet wellness journey for a while, you know I strongly believe in rotational feeding, ingredient transparency, and meeting dogs where they’re at nutritionally and lifestyle-wise. No single food works for every dog forever, and variety (when done safely) can support gut health, nutrient balance, and long-term wellness.

Recently, I started re-exploring We Feed Raw, and after diving into their safety standards, sourcing, and convenience tools, it’s a brand I feel confident introducing into Darla’s nutritional rotation. I’m always thoughtful about what I introduce to my dogs, especially when it comes to balancing nutrition with lifestyle practicality. We Feed Raw checks a lot of boxes that matter to me as both an animal caregiver and a dog mom.

We Feed Raw was founded with the goal of making raw feeding safer, more approachable, and less overwhelming for everyday pet parents. Raw feeding can sometimes feel intimidating because of obvious concerns for bacteria, balancing nutrients, or proper handling. What stood out to me is their focus on combining nutrition with modern food safety protocols. Their meals are formulated to be complete and balanced while prioritizing high-quality animal proteins and minimal processing — something many fresh feeding advocates, myself included, value when building a dog’s diet.

We Feed Raw is currently (since 2024) included on Susan Thixton’s Annual List from Truth About Pet Food, which highlights companies that meet Susan’s strict verification standards. For many pet parents and professionals in the fresh feeding space, this list is considered a meaningful third-party checkpoint when evaluating brands. While no food choice is one-size-fits-all, seeing a company actively meet these standards adds a strong layer of confidence.

Okay, let’s talk about something practical that I didn’t realize would make such a difference in my routine. We Feed Raw sent over their silicone thaw containers, and I genuinely love them! They make daily feeding smoother in ways that matter for consistency.

They are:

• Easy to portion meals
• Leak-resistant and fridge-friendly
• Simple to clean and reuse
• Compact for storage and organization
• Helpful for safe thawing practices

If you’ve ever tried juggling thawing food in original packaging or random containers, you know it can get messy fast. Small tools like this remove friction, which is huge for helping pet parents stay consistent with fresh feeding.

Rotational feeding helps expose dogs to a wider variety of nutrients, proteins, and amino acid profiles while also supporting gut microbiome diversity. It can also reduce the risk of developing sensitivities from feeding a single protein or formula long-term. Every dog is different, and transitions should always be intentional and monitored. But having brands that offer flexibility, safety, and convenience helps make rotational feeding sustainable for real life — not just ideal situations.

Fresh feeding doesn’t have to feel overwhelming when it’s approached thoughtfully and at a pace that works for both you and your dog. I always encourage pet parents to do their research, ask questions, and choose options that truly support their dog’s individual needs.

Reply and tell me what’s currently in your dog’s bowl — I love seeing what everyone is feeding!

I remember noticing first she needed help standing to eat. Then I remember adjusting bowls, supporting her body, and telling myself we’d “take it day by day.” But by the Summer, Lily was officially paralyzed and there was no going back. You don’t get the luxury of sitting in fear for very long — your dog still needs you. So… we adapted

Lily can still express her bladder on her own, but I help her every few hours to make sure she’s fully emptying. I’ve learned her cues — she’ll huff and puff at me until I pay attention, and sure enough, once I check… bam! it all comes out. That consistency has made a noticeable difference in her comfort. Along with daily hygiene that is non-negotiable. We use manuka honey wipes followed by a topical antibacterial spray to help reduce bacteria. It’s not glamorous work, but these small routines play a huge role in preventing infections — especially for paralyzed dogs, who are more prone to moisture build-up.

We rotate acupuncture and chiropractic therapy monthly, alternating every 2 weeks. It’s become part of our rhythm — not something we “try when things get bad,” but something we use proactively to keep her body supported.

She also gets CBD & Mushrooms daily including an anti-inflammatory blend in the morning, seizure-support at night, and a calming blend as needed if she’s anxious or stressed. On top of that, Lily receives milk thistle, bladder, and kidney support — all chosen intentionally and adjusted as her needs change. None of this is about chasing perfection… it’s about maintaining her quality of life.

Over the last two years, I have noticed a frustrating pattern that Lily would always get UTIs in May and again in the Fall from September–November. So this Winter, I made two big changes!

First, I introduced phytoembryonic (a gemmotherapy approach) from Canine Herbalist Rita Hogan. Second, on days when I know I might not be able to express her bladder on time, I add Colloidal Silver to her water/food. With May approaching, my fingers are crossed 🤞 with cautious optimism that this new routine has finally broken that cycle.

Nutrition Has Been a Game Changer as Pork and Rabbit have become the cornerstones of Lily’s diet. By following a protein rotation and implementing a TCVM Water based diet on weekends, I’ve seen noticeable improvements in her bloodwork. When I was feeding beef and turkey more regularly, her BUN levels were much more elevated while this current rotation has supported her kidneys far more effectively.

For fun, she also gets:

• Small Batch Pork treats with Chamomile which has recently become part of Lily’s routine because it supports more than just her mood! It truly helps soothe the nervous system, ease muscle tension, and digestion — all things that matter when a dog’s body is under constant stress from limited mobility.

• Heart & Kidney treats with Beef have been a part of Lily’s routine for awhile now as I follow a “like feeds like” approach! These organ meats help support the heart and kidneys — which is especially important since Lily has both a heart murmur and kidney disease. I rotate beef with pork that so she gets targeted support without overwhelming her system.

• Bone Broth has also become a regular part of Lily’s routine nourishing her body, supporting her joints, and providing gentle, easy-to-digest nutrients — all essential when managing chronic conditions and mobility challenges. Although, I’m still on the lookout for more pork and rabbit options to keep her rotation varied rather than popular Beef & Chicken.

Looking Back — and Looking Forward 🐾💗

When I first adopted Lily, she was actually diagnosed with Grade 2 Luxating Patella, NOT Pug Myelopathy. Thankfully, it never caused her much trouble — there were only a few times I had to gently adjust her joint back into place, and her vets never stressed surgery as necessary. These last 12 years with Lily have definitely taught me to be more observant, proactive, and far less dismissive of “minor” issues.

If there’s one supplement I wish I had introduced earlier for Lily, it’s Myos Green Lipped Mussel. I didn’t start using it until about 4 months AFTER her suspected IVDD diagnosis — and while it’s been supportive, I can’t help but think about how different things might have looked if I had implemented it proactively instead of reactively.

As Darla was recently diagnosed also with Grade 2 Luxating Patella — the same diagnosis Lily had when I first adopted her — Myos was the first supplement I added to her routine. Not because something is “wrong,” but because I now understand how much joint, muscle, and connective tissue support matters before degeneration sets in. It’s been eye-opening to see what’s common in pugs and how much earlier awareness can make a difference.

Caring for a paralyzed dog — managing bladder expression, hygiene, supplements, therapies, and nutrition — takes a toll. Some days, it’s exhausting, mentally and physically. And that’s okay. Part of quality care is also being gentle with yourself, recognizing your limits, and giving yourself grace. These lessons have shaped everything I do now. From watching Lily thrive despite her challenges, to caring proactively for Darla, I’ve learned that mindful, intentional support — for our dogs and for ourselves — makes all the difference.

In order to truly “protect our pets”, immunization should be the goal since a vaccinated pet (while fairly rare) is still able to contract disease.

Most pet parents want to keep their animals safe without exposing them to unnecessary medical interventions. Titer testing offers a simple, science-based way to check current immunity before vaccinating — helping you make informed, individualized decisions about their health. If you’ve ever wondered “Does my pet really need another booster?”, then this guide is for you!

WHAT IS A TITER TEST?

A titer test (pronounced tight-er) is a blood test that measures the level of antibodies your pet has developed from previous vaccinations or natural exposure.

In simple terms, a titer test tells you:

• Does my pet already have immunity?

• Do they actually need a booster?

• Is it safe to delay or skip certain vaccines?

Titer testing is especially helpful for:

• Pets with unknown or incomplete vaccine histories

• Pets who have experienced adverse vaccine reactions

• Pets with chronic illness, immune compromise, & high-risk conditions
  
  Titer tests CAN: provide documentation that many facilities will accept

  Titer tests CAN NOT: replace legally required vaccines in most states

  Important note about rabies:
  Even if a rabies titer shows strong immunity, state laws still require revaccination at set intervals unless a medical exemption is granted.

WHY TITER VS BOOSTER?

Many pet owners and veterinarians are increasingly concerned about routine over-vaccination. Core vaccines can provide long-lasting—even lifelong—immunity, yet many pets continue to receive boosters on a one-size-fits-all schedule. For example, a 7 lb dog receives the same vaccine dose as a 125 lb dog, and the 1-year and 3-year rabies vaccines are identical in formulation—the difference lies in the labeling and state-mandated vaccination intervals.

This is why titer testing is so valuable because it allows veterinarians and pet parents to determine whether immunity is already present before giving another vaccine.

Integrative vets emphasize that revaccinating a pet who already has strong immunity may be unnecessary and, in high-risk pets, potentially harmful. This is especially true for animals with vaccine sensitivities, chronic illness, immune compromise, or a history of adverse reactions.

The goal is personalized medical care, not automatic revaccination. Your veterinarian’s professional judgment—guided by current immunology research and your pet’s unique health status—should come before outdated, one-schedule-fits-all habits.

The Gold Standard: Kansas State University

I’ve spent years caring for pets, researching their diets, and advocating for their health. But even I was shocked when I first watched Pet Fooled back in 2016.

Before I became “the pug mom”, I had experienced heartbreak: we lost our beloved family dog to a misdiagnosis in 2013 while she was eating both Hill’s and Blue Buffalo. Within the first three months, our other dog Xander suddenly passed away, and then she died on the operating table as it was too late to save her.

There’s a saying I’ve always found fascinating: “Keep your friends close, and your enemies closer.”

For a long time, I wanted nothing to do with Rover. Like many pet care professionals, I was frustrated by how the platform undervalues the real trust, communication, and accountability that goes into caring for someone’s pets. I still carry Frances with me, my family’s dog who was misdiagnosed and suffered for 6 months before passing on the operating table. 💔 Heartbreak that shaped me ✨

On June 24th, 2025 we said goodbye to my beloved Mr. Dixon Pugstable. Losing him has been one of the most painful experiences in my life.

Grief comes in waves—sometimes soft and quiet, sometimes sharp and unexpected—showing up in moments I never anticipated and reminding me just how deeply we were connected.

He was ⅓ of the reason why I began this journey as a Canine Concierge. I wanted to fight for dogs like him. To help pet parents ask the right questions. To support professionals in a way that ensures no pet falls through the cracks. More than Luna & Lily, he lit that fire in me. I adopted Dixon because of his special needs, not in spite of them—and he quickly became my greatest teacher. When traditional vets couldn’t provide answers, I became a certified animal caregiver and consulted with national experts to fight for his health. From dermatitis to arthritis to dementia, he defied the odds and lived a full 18 years. Along the way, he taught me everything I know about the gut microbiome and continues to inspire the work I’m so passionate about today.

Now in his absence, I feel him with me. He’s been sending me dragons 🐉 —at home, on TV and in shadows — gentle signs that he’s still near and at peace. If you’ve ever lost a beloved pet, you know how powerful those messages can be. They’re quiet but undeniable. A reminder that love never really leaves. And then—one of the quiet highs of this year is that we didn’t replace Dixon… but we did open our hearts again after fostering for 2 months, we adopted Darla!

She came to us after being surrendered to The Animal Foundation with a damaged eye, later transferred to a local pug rescue where she received the surgery she so desperately needed. When she arrived, she was fragile and clearly traumatized—but we watched her, day by day, begin to feel safe, to trust, and to learn how to love again. As she healed, she brought laughter, curiosity, and a new rhythm into our home. Watching her transformation made it clear that she wasn’t just passing through. That’s when we made the decision to officially make her a Pugstable —honoring her journey, her resilience, and everything Dixon was and Luna still is to me.
